What the Star Account Actually Is
The Star Sydney does not work like a regular online casino where you tap through a web form and start playing. It runs a membership-based setup: every player has to hold a Star Account that is linked to a physical Star Card before any gaming on the property is allowed. From 19 November 2024 this moved from recommended to mandatory. No Star Card simply means no access to gaming areas.
That Star Account is basically the hub for both your money and your loyalty activity on site. It is where your playable balance sits, where your points accrue, and how your play feeds into the Star Club tier system. Our team has compared onboarding procedures at several Australian venues and, in our view, The Star Sydney is on the stricter, more document-heavy side. Given the NSW regulatory pressure, that approach is unsurprising.
Creating Your Account at the Venue
You cannot open a Star Account from home. Registration only happens face to face. You need to turn up at the complex at 80 Pyrmont Street, Pyrmont, Sydney NSW 2009 and head to either Guest Services or the Star Club desk. There is no first-time signup via app or website, and no phone-based workaround. The whole flow is anchored to Australian KYC and anti-money-laundering requirements.
One small but practical observation from our experience: bring your documents in order. People who arrive with correct, current ID nearly always move through quite quickly. Those who are missing something, or have expired ID, may end up waiting, going back to their hotel room, or simply not registering that day.
In broad strokes, this is what actually happens when you get there:
- Walk up to the Guest Services counter or the Star Club desk.
- Tell staff you want to open a Star Account and get a Star Card.
- Hand over a valid, current identity document for checking.
- Complete the membership form, copying all personal details exactly as they appear on your ID.
- Choose and set a PIN - this code will be required for any top up at a cashier.
- Staff issue your physical Star Card and connect it to a new Member ID.
- If you plan to play immediately, take the card to a cashier and load funds.
- Use your Star Card + PIN at the Chip Purchase Desk or directly at a table to get chips and begin.
Legal age is 18 or over. That is checked as part of the identity verification stage instead of being handled as a separate gate.
Identity Documents and KYC
The Star Sydney relies on standard Australian documents to confirm who you are. Below is what they list as acceptable primary ID.
| Document Type | Accepted Format | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Australian Driver Licence | Physical card | Must be current, not expired |
| NSW Digital Licence | Digital on-device | Accepted as valid ID |
| Passport | Physical booklet | Any nationality, must be current |
| Proof-of-Age Card | Physical card | State-issued cards accepted |
On top of basic ID, The Star Sydney applies source-of-funds checks in line with NSW casino regulation. For tournament money - for example, when someone is buying into WPT Australia events - players are asked to show that the funds came from a personal bank account held in their own name. A printed bank statement, a payment receipt, or even a clear screenshot from your mobile banking app can all be used as supporting evidence.
One detail that sometimes surprises visitors: KYC is not completely “set and forget”. If your account activity reaches certain internal compliance thresholds, The Star may ask you to refresh or update your documentation. Similar logic is used across regulated Australian casino properties and ties back to the oversight role of the NSW Casino Control Authority.
Loading Funds onto Your Star Account
Once staff activate your Star Account and hand over the Star Card, you can start moving money into it. All deposits are processed at cashier windows on the property. To authorise each transaction, you show the Star Card and input your PIN on the keypad. On the floor, two primary on-site methods tend to be used.
Cash deposits can be made at any cashier. Here, The Star applies a daily ceiling of AUD 5,000 per person. If you prefer to use plastic, EFTPOS, credit card or debit card transactions are handled at the Chip Purchase Desk on the main gaming floor, with a limit of AUD 10,000 per transaction.
For people playing in tournaments, or anyone who likes to have funds ready to go before landing in Sydney, there is also a bank or wire transfer option directly into The Star Sydney Casino account. The details published in official tournament material look like this:
| Transfer Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Bank | National Australia Bank (NAB) |
| Bank Address | Ground Floor, 333 George Street, Sydney NSW 2000 |
| Swift Code | NATAAU3303M |
| Beneficiary Name | The Star Pty Ltd |
| Beneficiary Address | 80 Pyrmont St, Pyrmont NSW 2009 |
| BSB | 082-001 |
| Account Number | 579383265 |
| Transfer Reference | Member ID and surname |
Anyone using a bank transfer should arrive with proof of that payment. In practice that might be a PDF statement, a paper confirmation from your bank, or a phone screenshot that clearly shows the transfer. The cashier checks the incoming funds against your Member ID and only then applies the amount to your Star Account balance.
